**Kim Marriott**, head.  Greeted and ran the meeting with many others.  John Betts, **Bernd Meyer** (associate professor), **Nandita Battacharjee** (senior lecturer who excused herself as not being needed), **Luke Dawson** (study abroad for USA, Canada, and Latin America), **Sita Ramakrishnan** (senior lecturer, in charge of software engineering program), and **Caitlin Slattery** (manager of academic programs support, including study abroad).

Typical study abroad course for visiting students: Australian Idol, AUS 1060 (http://arts.monash.edu.au/ncas/ugrad/idol.php).

Recent statistic for study abroad program: 48 Monash students studied abroad, 38 students came to Monash to study (0 from CS).

They have an "industry-based learning program".

Their BS in CS options include computational sciences, software engineering, and business information systems (IBL students and are not too closely related to this department).  Bernd is in charge of the computational science program; Sita for software engineering.

Students do a capstone project connected with a Monash research center.

An option for our students is to study at one of the other Monash campuses South Africa or Malaysia. 

They have an exchange fair.  Met Glenda Caudill.

Many Monash exchanges are two semester long.

Room rates: $25/night or $4000/semester (which is more than $25/night--includes board?).

They are one hour and three transportation changes to the city.  Still, it is a nice area even if a bit isolated from the Melbourne night life.

**Sita Ramakrishnan**.  In charge of software engineering program, recently re-done.  It is a four-year, accredited program (and has been for 11 years, aligned with ACM/IEEE Sofware Engineering Body of Knowledge, SWEBOK).

Program includes a 12 week paid employment stint, approved and related to software engineering.  Employer certifies.  Students right reflective essay.

IBL separate, for qualified students.

MURPA: Monash University Research Program Abroad.  Many IT students go to UCSD.  David Abramson, professor at Monash, was a student there.

Terminology: "vacation employment" = "internship".

Eiffel programming language used in 2nd year software engineering (FIT 2024).  Includes maintenance, testing, and impact analysis.

Distributed computing, grid model checking, parallel models.  Pre-requisites include OS and networking.

CS aligning more closely now with science (moving away from engineering).

**Bernd Meyer**. In charge of computational science program.

Common core determined by IT faculty.  I have colored chart.  Algorithmic problem solving.  Advanced programming in 3rd year.  Electives in numerics, HCI, and other areas.

Research strengths include computation science (HPC, numerical computing, biology plus), decision support systems, systems development major.

IBL: company trains student.

FIT 3xx advanced problem solving, large project, foundation of capstone project.

Areas: computer graphics and visualization, intelligent systems, scientific computing, parallel computing, distributed computing, numeric computation, HCI.

Plus, software engineering areas including networking and operating systems.  Broader than our definition and taught across programs (e.g., with software engineering program run by Sita).

FIT 3036: computer science project.  Individual project.  Research area specific.

Other areas: Analysis and design (architecture and design), formal specifications from software engineering, testing/quality.

They use and teach LTSA (Labeled Transition Systems Analyzer) tool from ICL for Reliability Analysis of Concurrent Systems.
